The index table (INDEX.TAB) contains one record for each observation file on this volumn. The index table is formatted so that they may be read directly into many database management systems on various computers. All fields are separated by tabs. A record is a sequence of fields terminated by a line feed. The structure and content of the index table is described in the file INDEX.LBL located in this directory. The file INDEX.LBL contains a label for INDEX.TAB coded in the Object Description Language (ODL), providing a formal description of the index table structure. Users of commercial database management systems should be able to use the INDEX.LBL file to define the names and characteristics of each field and then to load the tables into their systems using a delimited ASCII text input format.
