Not really an error or complaint . . . just my ignorance.

This section is the first place where you mention French

and Nicholson. When I read this, I wondered who they were

and what importance they had in supplying the data files.

Perhaps, those who will be using this volume know all about

them.

Correct year? Many, many files on this volume have this

date.

All changed to 2003-09-30 the date the volume was made available on line while in peer review.

7. \DATA\

A1. \DATA\ESO1M\ES1_EPD.LBL and \DATA\ESO1M\ES1_EPD.TAB

Table is defined as being 20 characters, however, table is

only 17 characters. Third column is defined as being four

characters, but in table, it is only one character. Either

pad out the third column to be four characters (before the

<cr><lf>), or change definition of third column to be one

character width. (Label file should have table defined as

being 19 characters, (17 char plus <cr><lf>).)

A2. Change: ^SERIES = (ES1_EPD.TAB ,1 )

To: ^SERIES = ("ES1_EPD.TAB",1)

Done.

B1. \DATA\ESO1M\ES1_IPD.LBL and \DATA\ESO1M\ES1_IPD.TAB

Table defined as being 20 characters (RECORD_BYTES = 20),

but table is only 17 characters. OBJECT = COLUMN definitions

are correct. Either change RECORD_BYTES = 20 to the correct

value, or pad out the table to be 20 characters.

D. Same "problems" seem to appear in all files in these

subdirectories. Please check byte counts and column widths

for all tables and labels.

8. \DOCUMENT\

A. \DOCUMENT\DOCINFO.TXT has a discussion about ASCII files

and <CR><LF>. The last sentence of the first paragraph

states, "In this directory, this applies to all files

except those in Adobe Acrobat format (*.PDF)." However,

there are no PDF files in this directory. Only the three

text files.

B. \DOCUMENT\GEOMETRY.TXT and \DOCUMENT\MODEL.TXT

Would it be "better" to have a PDF version of these files

where the mathematical formulas can be constructed in an

appropriate math display font? (Just a suggestion.)

C. \DOCUMENT\GEOMETRY.TXT

My ASCII word editor (UltraEdit32) says that this file is

a Macintosh formatted file. Should be generic DOS format.

(Not sure if this is a "problem" or against the standards.

It is just the only file on the volume that isn't DOS.)

9. \GEOMETRY\

A. \GEOMETRY\GEOMINFO.TXT

LICK1M\ - Supplemental geometry information for the Lick

observations is not available. The directory

contains an ASCII file repeating this lack.

However, the LICK1M sub-directory only contains a

GEOMINFO.TXT file which does not contain any information as

to the lack of geom info. It is only a blank label file

without any text.

B. \GEOMETRY\ESO1M\ES1_EGD.LBL

Change: ^SERIES = (ES1_EGD.TAB ,1 )

To: ^SERIES = ("ES1_EGD.TAB",1)

c. \GEOMETRY\*\*.LBL

As 9.B. above, check all ^SERIES keyword values and quote.

Done.

10. \INDEX\

A. \INDEX\*.TAB

Do not quote times and/or dates.

B. Rename xxx_INDEX.TAB to xxxINDEX.tab

C. ES1_INDEX.LBL and ES1_INDEX.TAB

Change: RECORD_BYTES = 239 (line #3)

To: RECORD_BYTES = 240

and

Change: ROW_BYTES = 239 (line #25)

To: ROW_BYTES = 240

and

Change: BYTES = 15 (line #55)

To: BYTES = 11

also, readjust START_BYTE and BYTES to reflect deletion of

quotes around date/time values.

D. ES2_INDEX.LBL and ES2_INDEX.TAB

as above, RECORD_BYTES and ROW_BYTES should be 240, also

column three BYTES should be 11 instead of 15.

E. Also checked "next" pair of files and they have the same

problem, (did not check all as they seem to have the same

errors). Please check all the rest of the files in this

sub-directory.

Maybe, perhaps, make these tables???

Our policy is to avoid changing source files.

OLE_RIGHT_ASCENSION not a valid keyword. Other
