******************************************************************************** Orientation of the Voyager 1 Scan Platform during the Saturn Encounter ====================================================================== Version 2: Continuous, Uncorrected UVS SEDR Pointing ==================================================== This is a Type 3 (linear interpolation) C kernel containing pointing information for the Voyager 1 UVS instrument during the Saturn encounter. Using the Voyager Frames kernel, one can deduce the pointing of any other instrument on Voyager's scan platform. This C kernel describes the pointing relative to the J2000 coordinate frame almost continuously during the encounter. Data Summary ------------ This C kernel was generated using the pointing information encapsulated in the "Supplemental Experiment Data Record" (SEDR) file for the Ultraviolet Spectrometer (UVS). This SEDR file was originally generated shortly after the Voyager flyby in Vax binary format. It was provided by Jay Holberg at the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory. Pedigree -------- No corrections have been applied to the SEDR data. Because a UVS spectrum was taken every 48 seconds through the flyby, this SEDR file provides continuous coverage (except for one gap post-encounter). The C kernel was generated using SPICE program MSOPCK. Accuracy -------- The UVS and ISS SEDR files show many incompatibilities at the level of ~ 1 degree. In those cases where they disagree, the ISS SEDR data have generally been found to be more accurate. However, the ISS SEDR file only records the scan platform orientation at the time when images were taken, leaving long intervals of the Voyager encounter with no pointing information. The key advantage of this C kernel is its continuity, not its accuracy. It is provided mainly for this reason, and to preserve historical information. Note that a "C-smithed" version of this C kernel is now available. See v1sat_version5_type3_merged_csmithed.ck for substantially finer accuracy as well as nearly continuous temporal coverage.
