PIA12233: Mapping the Moon, Point by Point

Mapping the Moon, Point by Point

Caption:

The science objective of NASA's Moon Mineralogy Mapper on board the Indian Space Research Organization's Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft is to map the composition of the moon and address scientific hypotheses with this information. The moon is comprised of rocks and soil, which have different reflected light, or spectral, signatures depending on their composition. Mapping the composition of the moon requires an imaging spectrometer instrument that measures the spectral signature for every point in an image.
